Prof. R. Venkatesh Babu is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Computational and Data Sciences (CDS) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. He received his doctorate degree from the Department of Electrical Engineering at IISc. Following his Ph.D., he held postdoctoral positions at NTNU, Norway, and IRISA/INRIA, Rennes, France, through the prestigious ERCIM Fellowship, and later worked as a research fellow at NTU, Singapore. He also spent a couple of years in industry before joining IISc in August 2010.
His research interests include Computer Vision and Deep Learning, and he has made significant contributions recognized by the SERB Star Award (2020) and the Sathish Dhawan Young Engineer Award (2019). He is a senior member of IEEE and AAAI and has been featured in the Stanford/Elsevier Top 2% Scientists list (2023, 2024) as well as recognized as the top AI researcher in India by CSRankings.org. He has also served in leading roles at major AI/ML conferences worldwide.
