Prof. Prabir Sarkar
Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Ropar
Dr. Prabir Sarkar is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar and the founding Chairman of the Institute’s Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Cell. He previously worked as an Associate Researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), U.S. Department of Commerce, Gaithersburg, USA, and in the R&D division of Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML).
He received his Ph.D. in Design Creativity and Master of Design in Product Design and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. His research spans product design, sustainability, creativity, biomimicry, ecodesign, engineering aesthetics, and sustainable machining, with a recent focus on developing agri-products and machines for rural applications.
Dr. Sarkar has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications, serves on editorial boards including the Journal of Engineering, Design and Technology and Smart and Sustainable Manufacturing Systems Journal (ASTM), and has secured significant external funding exceeding INR 115 crores. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers, India, and continues to contribute to advancing sustainable and innovative engineering solutions.
